Bio
Connor S. Read is a self-taught artist working primarily in acrylic on canvas and watercolor on paper. His passion for painting grew from a lifelong fascination with wildlife and the natural world, beginning with portrait and wildlife commissions before evolving into a dedicated studio practice centered on nature-inspired art.
Much of Read’s work is informed by time spent outdoors observing birds, native plants, and the subtle rhythms of the landscapes they inhabit. These experiences shape paintings that balance realistic wildlife subjects with expressive, atmospheric environments. While birds often serve as the focal point, his work extends beyond portraiture, exploring the relationships between
species and the habitats that sustain them.
Through layered color, selective detail, and a strong sense of place, Read seeks to create paintings that invite viewers to slow down, look closer, and discover the stories unfolding within a landscape. His work reflects both a naturalist’s curiosity and an artist’s desire to capture not only what is seen, but what is felt in moments of connection with the living world.
Artist’s Statement
I have always been drawn to the moments that reveal how interconnected the natural world truly is. A bird lifting from a prairie, a dragonfly weaving through wildflowers, or a grasshopper vanishing into the grasses may seem like small events, but together they form the intricate fabric of a living ecosystem. These quiet interactions are often the starting point for my paintings.
While birds frequently serve as the focal point of my work, they are rarely the entire story. I am equally interested in the habitats that support them and the countless relationships that exist beyond the immediate subject. The longer I spend observing a place, the more I discover that every landscape contains layers of life, movement, and connection waiting to be noticed.
My process begins with observation watching, exploring, sketching, and returning to the same places over time. From there, I use acrylic and watercolor to balance realism with atmosphere. Some elements are rendered with careful detail, while others remain suggestive and expressive, allowing the viewer to experience the feeling of a place rather than simply its appearance.
Ultimately, my work is an invitation to look closer. I hope my paintings encourage a sense of curiosity and appreciation for the wildlife and wild spaces that surround us, while reminding us that every landscape contains stories that reveal themselves through patience and attention.
