Bio
Connor S. Read is a self-taught artist working primarily in acrylic on canvas and watercolor on paper. His passion for painting grew from a lifelong fascination with wildlife and the natural world, beginning with portrait and wildlife commissions before evolving into a dedicated studio practice centered on nature-inspired art.
Much of Read’s work is informed by time spent outdoors observing birds, native plants, and the subtle rhythms of the landscapes they inhabit. These experiences shape paintings that balance realistic wildlife subjects with expressive, atmospheric environments. While birds often serve as the focal point, his work extends beyond portraiture, exploring the relationships between
species and the habitats that sustain them.
Through layered color, selective detail, and a strong sense of place, Read seeks to create paintings that invite viewers to slow down, look closer, and discover the stories unfolding within a landscape. His work reflects both a naturalist’s curiosity and an artist’s desire to capture not only what is seen, but what is felt in moments of connection with the living world.
Artist’s Statement
The longer I spend observing a place, the more I discover the countless interactions that give a landscape its character. My paintings grow from these moments of connection, exploring the wildlife, habitats, and relationships that often go unnoticed.
Birds frequently enter my work as a point of focus, but they are rarely the entirety of the subject. I am drawn to the larger ecological story surrounding them, and just as importantly, to what connects them: the vegetation, terrain, and other forms of life that shape a habitat and give it a sense of place. In this way, the landscape becomes more than a backdrop; it is an integral part of what I am trying to understand and convey.
My process begins with observation; spending time outdoors, sketching, photographing, and returning to the same places over time. In the studio, I use acrylic and watercolor to balance careful observation with an atmospheric treatment of color and light. Some elements are rendered with precise detail, while others are softened, simplified, or allowed to remain suggestive. I am interested in what can be communicated through this selective realism -- remaining grounded in observation while leaving room for interpretation.
For me, painting is a way of staying with a place long enough to see it differently. It is a practice of attention, but also of curiosity -- of allowing what I encounter in the natural world to shape the way I see and paint. That sense of discovery is what keeps me returning to the work.
